Mothering Sunday

Mothering Sunday is a Christian celebration observed in the UK and some other countries on the fourth Sunday of Lent.

Historically, it was the day when people returned to their “mother church,” the main church or cathedral in their region.

Over time the tradition evolved, and it became a day for honouring mothers and motherhood. Children often give cards, flowers, and small gifts, while families may gather for meals or special activities.

The day is now called Mother’s Day and celebrated in many parts of the world, though its religious origins and Lenten timing remain here in the UK.
