A prayer of approach

God the Holy Trinity, three in one, one in three,
ever-present mystery, be present in our midst
as we offer you our worship, our wonder and our praise. Amen.

Reading:  Matthew 28.16-20

Question for reflection

  1. What does excite you in lockdown?
  2. How might you experience the power and excitement of worship, God`s presence with you and continue to witness, in the current circumstances?

Reflections: ‘Go’, I am with you always

In Mathew Gospel, immediately after the genealogy, Matthew introduces Mary’s pregnancy with Jesus – who will be ‘Emmanuel’. And Matthew’s stresses the importance of this by then explaining that the title ‘Emmanuel’ means ‘God with us’. ‘God with us’ is the frame within which the whole Gospel of Matthew is structured. There is of course a clear ‘echo’ of the phrase in Jesus’ final words to his disciples which form part of our Gospel reading this coming Trinity Sunday. ‘I am with you always, to the end of the age’ (Matthew 28.20). Enclosed within this beginning and end in the life and ministry of Jesus, Matthew is sharing with us just what it means to speak of ‘God with us. That theme can perhaps speak to many of us in new ways in the current ‘difficult days’ in which loneliness and ‘self-isolation’ are the experience of quite a number of people.

And God says: Lo I am with you always to the close of the age.

Jesus’ final command to his followers (v.19) often loses its emphasis in translation: ‘Go’ is not the instruction, but rather, ‘As you are going…make disciples.’ The instruction is to make more disciples.  This final commission is our commission too. Wherever we are going, we are to make disciples, passing on the story and bringing others into our family of faith.

 And God says: Lo I am with you always to the close of the age

A meditative prayer inspired by Matthew 28.20

But what shall I do? Where shall I go? I’m not even sure what you want me to do! I won’t know what to say…

And God says: Lo I am with you always to the close of the age.

Don’t send me out there…So much poverty, so much sickness, so much hunger, so much injustice. I can’t possibly tackle all that…

And God says: Lo I am with you always to the close of the age.

I’m not even sure what I think or feel or believe. So much to think about.
So many alternatives, voices, ideas…

And God says: Lo I am with you always to the close of the age.

What if people laugh? What if they ignore me? What if they think I’m mad?

And God says: Lo I am with you always to the close of the age.

 Use me after I’ve lived my life a bit, when I’ve made some money, had some fun…next week…next year maybe?

And God says: Lo I am with you always to the close of the age.

Keep a minute of silence

But…Okay, here I am, send me….

And God says: Lo I am with you always to the close of the age.

A personal prayer

May the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ be my strength, wherever I go;
may the love of God be my joy, whatever my circumstances;
and may the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be my inspiration, whatever I do.
Amen.
